Final Assignment IV
Political Party Exploration
Honors Civics
Mr. Sommer
For the final assignment you have to complete two parts.
The first is the government’s response to your core political issue that you have chosen. In a, minimum, two page document please explain what are the leading laws written about your issue, explain how the executive branch is maintaining government intervention, and analyze why certain court decisions are the most important to your issue.
The second part I need you to accomplish is to write your final assessment of what needs to be done concerning your issue. You can choose either of two forms. The first is to submit your idea as an editorial or second as a letter to a public official. Yes, these will be submitted to the actual places you have identified. Your identification of a proper person/institution is important. If you have an international issue and you submit it to the Norwalk Hour I might sense you are not taking this seriously. We can discuss what is more appropriate, but come prepared to make an informed decision. You will submit one copy of this with part one. You will also submit a stamped, addressed envelope (yes, with the editorial/letter in it signed by you!) that will be mailed.
Again, submit:
Cover page (stapled submission)
Part one
Legislative decisions/Laws made
Executive actions/non-actions
Supreme Court Decisions (state and/or Federal)
Part two
Letter/Editorial
Also,
Letter/editorial, in envelope, properly addressed, proper postage
This will be due Thursday May 9th, 2011, by the end of the school day (2:30). If you are sick, e-mail me at the school address, by 5pm Easter standard time.
There will be 150 points for each branch assignment (per discussion with class one may be reduced to 100 Points), 50 points for the letter.
Values
LIBERTY --broad definition: “The ability to live one’s life as long as one sees fit
without government interference.”
narrow definition: “The right to do as one wishes as long as it does notinfringe on the rights of others.”
EQUALITY --broad definition: “All people are treated the same.”
Equality of opportunity: “There are no outside constraints that prevent onefrom achieving what others are allowed to achieve.”
Equality of condition: “All people share social benefits equally.”
JUSTICE --“Give each person his or her due.”
“The impartial treatment of people based on the facts of the situation and
not the status of the individuals involved.”
COMMON GOOD --“An action which creates the greatest happiness for the greatest
number of people.”
INDIVIDUALISM --“The right of the individual takes precedent over society as a
whole.”
